In 1871, a need arose. The Metropolitan District Railway decided to operate its own trains. This required a new depot. Thus, Lillie Bridge Depot was born. Lillie Bridge Depot was built on derelict land west of Earl’s Court. It provided stabling and maintenance for the District Railway’s rolling stock.

Lillie Bridge Depot has a rich and evolving history. Initially serving the District Railway, its role shifted in 1905. A new depot at Ealing Common took over District line maintenance. Lillie Bridge Depot was then reconfigured for the Piccadilly line. It continued to serve the Piccadilly line until 1932. Then extensions led to another new depot at Northfields. Lillie Bridge Depot then transitioned to a permanent way depot for engineering purposes. This marked a new chapter in its life.

Lillie Bridge Depot played a crucial role in the development of long welded rails. In 1937, a flash butt welding plant was installed. This plant operated until the completion of the Victoria line. The facility was then moved to Ruislip depot. After this, Lillie Bridge Depot was used for maintaining London Underground’s battery locomotives. The depot also played a unique role with steam locomotives. Although steam passenger services on the District line ended in 1905, Lillie Bridge Depot housed two steam locomotives for shunting. From the 1940s, all London Underground steam locomotives were maintained at Lillie Bridge Depot. This continued until their withdrawal in 1971.

Lillie Bridge Depot has seen several reconfigurations throughout its lifetime. These occurred in 1932, 1962, and 1987. Each reconfiguration adapted the depot to the changing needs of the London Underground. The depot is scheduled for decommissioning by 2024 as part of an Earl’s Court regeneration scheme. Engineering facilities will move to Acton Works. A new, lower-level stabling area for S7 Stock trains will be built. The scheme has faced criticism from various stakeholders. These include the Mayor of London, the Hammersmith and Fulham Council, local housing associations, and residents. Lillie Bridge Depot stands as a testament to London’s evolving transportation history. It has adapted to the changing times and served various critical functions. From steam locomotives to modern-day trains, this depot has played a vital role.
