What if this little stream could talk? Lilburne Stream has stories to tell. It is more than just a waterway. It’s a part of Auckland’s story.

Lilburne Stream is located at -37.081389 latitude and 175.16825 longitude. It is a stream in North Auckland.

I wish I could tell you more about the history or unique facts of Lilburne Stream. But I can share a story about a nearby stream. The Oratia Stream flows northeast from Waiatarua. It ends at Te Wai-o-Pareira / Henderson Creek. This creek then enters the Waitematā Harbour.

The Oratia Stream has changed over time. It now flows through Oratia, Sunnyvale and Henderson. Since the mid-2000s, native plants have been planted along the stream. The Oratia Stream has six tributaries. These include Potter Stream, Bendall Creek and Cantys Stream.

Historically, the land around the Oratia Stream was a flood zone. Tōtara, tītoki and kōwhai trees grew here. The freshwater crab Amarinus lacustris lives in the stream.

The Oratia Stream is part of the rohe of Te Kawerau ā Maki. People have lived near the stream since the 16th century. The name Oratia comes from a pā near Holdens Road. The upper part of the stream was called Waihorotiu. Te Kōpua, now Falls Park, was a strategic pā site. Canoes could travel up to this point. Shells found near the Oratia pā date back to 1570.

Thomas Canty milled kauri timber near the Oratia Stream in 1841. He gained logging rights in 1843. Settlers used the stream to transport logs to Henderson in the mid-19th century. Back then, it was called Cantys Creek.

In 1855, George Pirrit and his son William dammed the Oratia Stream. They used a water turbine to make iron plates for boots.

From the 2000s to the 2020s, Project Twin Streams planted native trees along the Oratia Stream.

Like the Oratia Stream, Lilburne Stream has probably seen a lot of changes. It would be wonderful to know more about the history of Lilburne Stream. Perhaps future research will reveal its unique story.
