“A secret recipe, whispered through generations,” our guide began, his voice low, drawing us closer to the Likörfabrik in Radeberg. The Radeberger Likörfabrik, a name synonymous with exquisite herbal liqueur, stands as a testament to tradition and taste. It began in 1877, when Wilhelm Richter established the “Golden Sun Steam Distillery and Liqueur Factory”. The Likörfabrik, nestled just outside Dresden, has been producing its signature liqueur for over 140 years. It’s a German premium bitter, made according to the original 1877 recipe. The recipe, initially touted as a medicinal bitter, found its way to the Saxon Royal Court. There, it was praised as a “stomach-strengthening delicacy”. This royal endorsement propelled the Likörfabrik to new heights. Wilhelm Richter proudly presented his liqueur at exhibitions around the turn of the century. The accolades poured in, with numerous gold medals affirming its quality. Even customers sent “letters of recognition” praising the liqueur’s exceptional taste. One letter from 1927 declared their “fullest appreciation for the quite excellent quality”. The Likörfabrik persevered through wars and political changes, remaining a private enterprise under Richter’s heirs. Today, the lovingly restored distillery still operates in Radeberg, a symbol of its enduring legacy. It continues to be family-owned, a testament to its rich history. The Original Radeberger Herbal Liqueur even earned the prestigious title of “most awarded German herbal liqueur” in 2017. The Likörfabrik also crafts a limited edition, the Radeberger Reserve. This unique liqueur matures in old Scottish whisky barrels. The aging process imparts smoky, woody notes with hints of chocolate and citrus. The Radeberger Likörfabrik welcomes visitors. Here, in the heart of Radeberg, you can experience the tradition and craftsmanship behind this exceptional liqueur. It’s a taste of history, carefully preserved and shared with the world.
