Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church

In the heart of Chicago, the Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith, perseverance, and the power of music. The church’s story begins not within these walls, but in the heart of a man named Jerry D. Goodloe. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1923, Goodloe’s journey eventually led him to Chicago, where his musical inclinations and deep faith intertwined. He honed his piano skills, playing gospel hymns from the “Gospel Pearl” hymnal, and became a member of various choirs and singing groups, including the Haynes Singers and the Chicago Gospel Pearls. In 1956, Goodloe answered his calling to the ministry. He pursued religious education at Moody Bible Institute and other institutions, solidifying his foundation in God’s word. The Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church was officially organized on May 11, 1962. The first meeting was held in a humble setting: the home of Mrs. Mae Nelson Lewis on South Calumet Avenue. Just two days later, on Mother’s Day, the first official service took place at 1014 West 69th Street. From these modest beginnings, the church, under Goodloe’s leadership, flourished. He served not only as pastor but also as choir director, musician, and even janitor, demonstrating his unwavering dedication. The church’s growth necessitated several moves. They eventually settled at 7945 S. Exchange Avenue in 1986, a location that could accommodate their expanding congregation. Music remained a vital part of the Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church’s identity. Under Goodloe’s guidance, the church’s Evangelical Concert Choir recorded two successful albums, “I Can Go to God in Prayer” and “Tell it to Jesus,” further spreading their message of faith through music. Goodloe’s leadership extended beyond the pulpit. He was instrumental in establishing the church’s Board of Directors and championed education within the community. His dedication and service were recognized with numerous honors, including “Jerry D. Goodloe Day” and the renaming of a portion of Exchange Avenue to “Honorary Dr. Rev. Jerry D. Goodloe Way.” Even a devastating fire in 2005 couldn’t extinguish the church’s spirit. With unwavering faith and the support of the community, the sanctuary was rebuilt, a symbol of their resilience. After Goodloe’s passing in 2015, Rev. Deon B. White took the helm, continuing the legacy of faith and music at the Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church. The church’s journey, from a small gathering in a private home to a thriving community on South Exchange Avenue, echoes the enduring power of faith and the transformative influence of music.
