Gazing at Light Weight O, one might wonder about its curious name. This mirrored sculpture, a captivating artwork by Catherine Griffiths, once floated effortlessly above O’Connell Street. Light Weight O was a prominent feature from 2018 until mid-2021. The sculpture was then removed for building renovations. Light Weight O was meant to be re-installed. However, the new owner of the adjacent Administrator House declined permission. Andrew Barnes, the new owner, raised concerns about earthquake compliance of the original fastenings. The 2.4-meter diameter artwork, with its brass backing and mirrored face, was designed to reflect the surrounding heritage architecture. The artist intended Light Weight O to encourage observation of the sky, buildings, and the ground below. Catherine Griffiths envisioned Light Weight O as a way to connect people with the built environment and the space between earth and sky. The sculpture highlighted the character of the area by portraying shifting reflections of the city. Now, the Auckland Council is exploring options to relocate Light Weight O with the artist’s support. Hopefully, this unique piece will soon grace another spot in Auckland, continuing to capture the changing urban landscape.
