How about a journey through time right here at the Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium? This school stands as a testament to Liechtenstein’s commitment to education. It has evolved significantly since its founding.

The Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium first opened its doors in 1937. Back then, it was known as Collegium Marianum. The Maristen-Schulbrüder, or Marist Brothers, established it as a private school.

For many years, the Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium operated independently. However, in 1981, a significant change occurred. The state of Liechtenstein took over, transforming it into a public school. This transition marked a new chapter for the institution.

Since the mid-1980s, the Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium has experienced steady growth. One notable factor was the admission of girls in the mid-1960s. Today, over 700 students attend the school.

The Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium is divided into two main sections. These are the Unterstufe and the Oberstufe. The Unterstufe includes grades US1, US2, and US3. It serves as the lower secondary level. The Oberstufe comprises grades OS1, OS2, OS3, and OS4. This is the upper secondary level.

Students can enter the Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium from the Realschule. The Realschule offers a less theoretical education. There are three entry points. Students can join US2 after Realschule’s first grade. Alternatively, they can enter OS1 after the third or fourth grade of Realschule.

In the Unterstufe, all students follow a common curriculum. This includes religious education, geography, and history. They also study German, science, informatics, and technics. Art, music, physical education, and mathematics are included too. In US2, students begin learning English, Latin, and French.

The Oberstufe offers five specialized education tracks. Students must choose one. The tracks are Lingua, Modern Languages, Art, Music, and Pedagogy. Economics and Law form another track. Mathematics and Science complete the options.

Basic subjects remain important in the Oberstufe. These include English, German, French, mathematics, and physics. Students also choose elective courses to deepen their specialization.

To graduate, students must pass OS4 and earn a “sufficient” mark on two dissertations. Written exams cover German, English, or French. Mathematics and a subject related to their specialization are also tested. Oral exams span various fields. These include philosophy, religious education, ethics, history, and mathematics.

The Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium stands as a cornerstone of Vaduz. From its humble beginnings as Collegium Marianum to its current status as a public gymnasium, it has shaped countless lives. The Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium remains a vital institution. It prepares students for future success.
