Liceo 61

Opened in 2003, Liceo 61 “Villa Cosmópolis” stands as a testament to the Cerro community’s dedication to education. Liceo 61 was the first high school exclusively for baccalaureate studies in this bustling neighborhood. Its inauguration was a significant event. The Inspector of Institutes and High Schools, Professor Ana María González, the first and current director, Professor Liliana Giacummo, and the Head of Secretariat, Alba Quian, were all present. Liceo 61 is strategically located on Rambla Egipto 3971, between Bélgica and China streets. It sits facing the Bay of Montevideo, a constant reminder of the vast world awaiting its students. The school serves a large area. Its reach extends primarily to Villa del Cerro, then Casabó, Cerro Norte, La Teja, La Paloma, Paso de la Arena, and Santa Catalina. In 2007, the institution received official recognition. The Legislative Power passed Law No. 18106. This law formally named Liceo 61 as “Villa Cosmópolis.” Today, Liceo 61 thrives. It boasts 32 baccalaureate groups, encompassing around 1,379 students. The dedicated staff includes 108 teachers, 3 administrative personnel, and 7 other staff members. Since its inception, Liceo 61 has been driven by a clear mission. The school’s central project focuses on enhancing the quality of learning for its young students. This includes promoting a comprehensive education. The education at Liceo 61 develops competencies, skills, knowledge, and values. Liceo 61 aims to shape well-rounded individuals. The school fosters the successful integration of its graduates into social, professional, and academic spheres. To achieve these aims, Liceo 61 has implemented several projects across its curriculum. For example, since 2009, the school has actively participated in the “Water Project”. In 2011, Liceo 61 embraced the Educational Commitment Program. This program has been met with widespread enthusiasm and achievement within the school community. Liceo 61 maintains strong ties with local institutions. It has collaborated with establishments like the Florencio Sánchez Theater, the APEX-UDELAR Project, the Cerro Coordinated Center through the Zonal Polyclinic, and CCZ No. 17. The school’s leadership team has been constant since 2012. The team is composed of Director Professor Liliana Giacummo, Day Shift Subdirector Professor Jenifer Cherro, and Night Shift Subdirector, Professor Graciela Reolon. Looking forward, Liceo 61 has its sights set on expansion. Beyond its educational goals, the school seeks to broaden community involvement and outreach.
