Here stands the College of Liberal Arts. It concentrates mainly on linguistics. It also focuses on liberal arts, history and sociology theory. The College of Liberal Arts is part of Shanghai University. There are 141 full-time teachers. And there are 1244 students.

The college was founded in December 1978. It was renamed College of Liberal Arts. This happened after the establishment of Shanghai University in 1983. The college has a student body of over 1000 undergraduates. It also has over 600 graduates.

Departments include Chinese Language and Literature. There is also a History Department and a Sociology Department. Also there is the Department of Archives Management and the Department of Chinese Culture Study. The SU College of Liberal Arts offers five undergraduate programs. These are in Chinese Language and Literature. Another is Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. There are also programs for History, Sociology and Archives Management.

There are four master’s programs. They are in Chinese Language and Literature. Others are History, Sociology and Library. Also, there is Information and Archives Management. Five PhD programs are offered. These include Sociology and Anthropology. You can also study Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature. Ancient Chinese Literature is an option. Modern Chinese History is available as well.

Specializations are available for graduate students. They can enroll in master’s programs. These range from Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature. They also include Ancient Chinese Literature and Theory of Literature and Art. You can study History on special topics. Ancient Chinese History is also an option. So is Modern and Contemporary Chinese History. Other specializations are Sociology and Anthropology. Folklore Study and Archives are further options.

The faculty has won 50 awards. These are for state or local research projects. These projects are in the field of liberal arts. The college is undertaking over 50 research projects. These are either international or intercollegiate cooperation type. Some are sponsored by the state. Others are by the municipal government. These support social science research and planning.

The college focuses on basic theoretical research. This research covers literature, history and sociology. It has established academic exchange programs. These are with many universities. It also has them with academic research institutes. These are in more than 10 countries.

Undergraduate programs take four years. Postgraduate programs take three years. Doctoral programs also take three years. Apply from March to June. Bachelor degree applicants need a high school certificate and score report. They also need HSK Level 6. Master’s and doctoral students should prepare two recommendation letters.

Undergraduate programs cost RMB 19800. Postgraduate programs cost RMB 24700. Doctoral programs cost RMB 27200. The application fee is RMB 410.
