What began as a humble gathering in a Chicago home in 1917 blossomed into a beacon of faith and resilience: the Liberty Union Baptist Church. Right here, on this very spot, two women, Mrs. Bertie Boone and Mrs. Maggie Walker, sought to form a social club. But fate, or perhaps divine intervention, had other plans. They felt the calling to establish a place of worship for their community. And so, the Liberty Union Baptist Church was born. The church’s journey was one of constant growth and evolution. From its humble beginnings, it flourished under the guidance of its first pastor, Rev. D.W. Bowen. New ministries were established, and the congregation thrived. However, their path was not without its challenges. The church saw several moves, each time seeking a larger space to accommodate its growing flock. The congregation even merged with two other churches, their faith and shared purpose binding them together. It was under the leadership of their fourth pastor, Rev. D.Z. Jackson, that Liberty Union Baptist Church truly came into its own. With 2,000 members strong, the church found a new home on 46th Street. But Rev. D.Z. Jackson had an even grander vision – a new edifice that would become a symbol of their enduring spirit. He initiated a ten-year plan, but sadly, he wouldn’t live to see his dream realized. Rev. D.Z. Jackson’s legacy lived on through his son, Rev. A.P. Jackson, who picked up the mantle and saw the project through. In 1956, on Thanksgiving Day, the Liberty Union Baptist Church opened its doors at its current location, a testament to the unwavering faith and perseverance of its congregation.
