Standing right before Liberton Hospital, you face a silent testament to a century of healing and care in Edinburgh. This grand building, a reminder of a more genteel time, whispers stories of its past. It was designed by John Dick Peddie and George Washington Browne, and opened its doors in 1906 as a facility for geriatric medicine. Originally known as the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Incurables, it operated in partnership with the Longmore Hospital, a separate facility. Back then, illness was a far more serious threat than today, and people often faced incurable conditions.

Liberton Hospital was a beacon of hope, providing care for those with long-term ailments. It was a truly unique facility, offering a range of services under one roof, from nursing care to medical treatments. The hospital was a cornerstone of the community, serving countless generations of patients.

But time marches on, and the hospital’s role has changed in recent decades. Like many institutions, it faced challenges and adjustments due to changing healthcare needs and the advent of new technologies. Eventually, Liberton Hospital transitioned from a hospital for incurable diseases to specializing in geriatric care.

But this is not the end for the grand edifice. In 2023, Edinburgh Council bought the hospital grounds and buildings for an impressive £14.8 million. The council plans to create an accessible neighborhood featuring new housing, including social housing options. The historic Edwardian-era buildings will be redeveloped while the later structures from the 1960s will be demolished. The aim is to maintain the historic character of the area while embracing sustainability.

Liberton Hospital will soon be a ghost of the past, a symbol of evolving healthcare and a vision for the future. It is a story of resilience, transformation, and the enduring human spirit in the face of changing times. Even as Edinburgh continues to evolve, the memory of this hospital will linger, a reminder of the enduring human need for care and compassion.
