Whispers of a dream carried on the sea breeze. This is Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery. Before you stands a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of early Chinese immigrants. Founded in 1898 this wasn’t just a building project. It began with a dream. Low Kim Pong a wealthy merchant dreamt of golden light rising from the west. He saw it as an omen. The next day he met a family of Buddhist pilgrims returning from Sri Lanka. Moved by their devotion he offered to build them a temple.
Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery wasn’t built overnight. Construction started in 1902 and finished in 1907. The completed monastery was a stunning achievement. Its design mirrored Xi Chan Si a temple in Fujian China. The architecture is a blend of three Fujian styles Fuzhou Quanzhou and Zhangzhou. This unique fusion reflects the diverse origins of the craftsmen who built it.
But time and the tropics took their toll. Termites weather and constant use caused damage. The monastery needed restoration. This wasn’t just a simple repair. This was a meticulous decade-long project. Experts from China Hong Kong and Taiwan were consulted. Carpenters sculptors and artisans from China recreated the original design using materials to withstand Singapore’s climate. Termite-resistant timber came from Sarawak. Water-resistant roof tiles were imported from Japan. The cost? A staggering S$40 million.
The result? A stunning replica of the 800-year-old Shanfeng temple pagoda stands proudly. Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery boasts a seven-story gold-topped pagoda. Inside you’ll find intricate carvings colourful beams and majestic gates. These stand over nine meters tall. They are supported by stone pillars and decorated with calligraphy.
Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a living history. It tells the story of faith community and resilience. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine.
