Perhaps you’ve wondered about the name, Lezica y Torrezuri. This place carries a story that stretches back centuries. It involves a nobleman, a miraculous recovery and the founding of a town.

Lezica y Torrezuri owes its name to Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri. He was a prominent figure in the Buenos Aires of the 1700s. Juan was born in Spain in 1709. He became a key political and military leader here.

Imagine Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri arriving in Buenos Aires. He was a man of Basque roots and noble lineage. He quickly became involved in the region’s affairs. He served as alcalde, which is like a mayor, and also as regidor, a city council member.

Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri commanded “La Atrevida”. This was a militia unit tasked with protecting Buenos Aires from indigenous peoples. Beyond his military duties, he was a successful merchant. He was an engineer, too.

The story takes an interesting turn with a tale of illness and faith. Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri fell gravely ill in 1736. Doctors couldn’t help. He turned to the Virgin of Luján, praying for recovery. He recovered and attributed his healing to her.

Years later, the illness returned. Juan was again in Buenos Aires. Once more, he recovered. This reinforced his belief in the Virgin’s miraculous power. He decided to honor her.

In 1755, Juan founded the town of Luján. More significantly, Lezica funded the construction of a proper church in Luján. This was to show his gratitude. He secured permission to oversee its construction in 1753. Construction began in 1754. The church was inaugurated in 1763. It became a symbol of his deep faith.

Lezica’s influence extended beyond religious matters. He was instrumental in elevating Luján to the status of a “Villa”. This granted it autonomy. It had its own council and legal system.

Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri died in Buenos Aires in 1784. He was buried with honor in the Santo Domingo convent. He left behind a legacy. His descendants became influential figures in Argentina. They were involved in business, banking and politics.

Today, Lezica y Torrezuri stands as a testament to Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri’s impact. It reminds us of his contributions to the region. His story is a blend of politics, faith and community development. It shaped this area. This place is more than just a name. It’s a story etched into the landscape. A story of a man, his faith and a town’s beginnings.
