The Leutewitzer Windmill stands tall. Its silhouette against the Dresden sky tells a story of grit and resilience.

This isn’t just any windmill. The Leutewitzer Windmill is a testament to Dresden’s industrial past. Built in 1839 by Johann Gottlieb Pietzsch it rose from the spoil heap of the Tiefe Elbstolln. This deep drainage tunnel served the nearby coal mines. The stone excavated for the tunnel formed the very foundation of this iconic structure.

Initially the windmill ground grain into flour. But its industrious owner had a clever plan. He also used it as a small tavern. Imagine the aroma of freshly baked bread mingling with the scent of locally produced wine. This clever business model transformed the windmill into a popular local destination.

In 1844 Friedrich Wilhelm Felgentreff bought the mill. He expanded the business considerably. He built a full-fledged inn and even a vineyard. The Leutewitzer Windmill became a beloved excursion spot. Guests enjoyed dancing and drinking under the shade of a beer garden.

The milling operation ceased in 1914. The inn’s popularity however continued. After German reunification in 1990 the Leutewitzer Windmill was fully restored as a restaurant. Today it’s the only fully operating restaurant-windmill in all of Saxony. The mill’s unique character remains.

Even the famous Apel puppet theater family contributed to its lore. Heinrich Apel Jr wrote a play called The Leutewitzer Windmill or The Poachers of the Zschoner Grund. This successful play was performed for decades in various versions. It highlights the windmill’s enduring presence in the local community.

A significant restoration took place in 2008. Today besides the restaurant you’ll find minigolf and beach volleyball courts. The Leutewitzer Windmill continues to thrive. It seamlessly blends history and modern entertainment. It’s a symbol of Dresden’s rich past. It also reflects its vibrant present. The Leutewitzer Windmill invites you to step back in time. Yet it also embraces the future with open arms.
