Leutewitzer Park’s story begins in the 18th century as a private estate for the von Carlowitz family. In 1906, a portion of Leutewitz, about 7 hectares, was incorporated into Dresden specifically to create this park. The official opening took place on September 30, 1911. Originally, the village of Leutewitz emerged around the 10th century. Its first documented mention dates back to 1071 under the name “Ludiwice.” Now, Leutewitzer Park stands as a testament to Dresden’s commitment to green spaces. The park boasts the iconic Leutewitzer Windmill, a historical landmark now a popular venue for events and a welcoming restaurant. It was originally built in 1839 for Johann Gottlieb Pietsch on an artificial mound created from the excavation of the Elbe Tunnel. He initially used it as a cider and wine tavern. Later, Wilhelm Felgentreff purchased the mill and established a restaurant with a beer garden. The actual milling operations ceased in 1914, superseded by the restaurant’s success. Today, the mill stands as a technical monument. It even underwent renovations in 1983/84 to become a youth recreation center. This transformation added the current terrace and access ramp.
