This was L’Étang-la-Ville in the 19th century, a peaceful village where agriculture reigned supreme. The name itself, L’Étang-la-Ville, hints at a watery past. It translates to “The Pond Town,” a nod to a large pond that once graced the village center. Over time, this pond disappeared, replaced by a meadow aptly named “le pré de l’Etang” – the meadow of the pond. The village’s name, however, evolved from “l’Etang” to “l’Etang sous Marly,” and finally to the L’Étang-la-Ville we know today. But for a brief period after the French Revolution, the village embraced the name “l’Etang les sources” – the pond of springs.
