What if parks could whisper secrets? The Leserpark in Bonn might tell tales of a family named Leser. This small park spans about 40000 square meters in Plittersdorf. It stretches along the Rhine River. The Leser family once owned the Villa Cahn near the park. That is how the Leserpark got its name.
Originally, the Leserpark was larger. Apartment buildings reduced its size in the 1980s. Even earlier, in the 20th century, officials wanted to build on the park. Wilhelm Leser, a lawyer, stopped those plans. He knew his way around the law.
Later, in the mid-1990s, Frank Asbeck bought the Villa Cahn and the Leserpark. He wasn’t required to open the park fully. But, he had to allow walking paths for the public.
In 2006, Asbeck enhanced the Leserpark. He planted 1400 rhododendron bushes. He added 9000 tulips and daffodils. Two playgrounds were also built for children. The city and Asbeck disagreed about fencing the park. He also built a pedestrian bridge without permission. It stretched 39 meters from Villa Cahn. It crossed a hollow area at a height of four meters. Officials considered the bridge an unnecessary intrusion. It was a significant change to the landscape.
