Can a cabaret become a crucible of creativity? At Les Trois Baudets, the answer is a resounding yes. Les Trois Baudets sits nestled at 64, boulevard de Clichy, at the foot of Montmartre in the Pigalle district. It’s not just a charming bar-restaurant, capable of hosting 50 diners and a 200-person concert venue. It’s a place where legends were born, a stage that cradled the nascent careers of some of France’s most iconic artists. Les Trois Baudets emerged from the vision of Jacques Canetti in the late 1940s. He saw a void in Paris, a lack of venues for emerging artists to showcase their talent. So, he transformed a dilapidated dance hall into this legendary theater. Canetti nurtured a unique environment. Unknown artists could perform nightly, sometimes for years, regardless of initial success. He gave them time to hone their craft, to find their voice, and to connect with an eager audience. Les Trois Baudets became synonymous with the burgeoning auteur-compositeur-interprète movement, a generation of singer-songwriters that Canetti championed. Think of Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel, Boris Vian. Imagine Guy Béart, Juliette Gréco, and Raymond Devos gracing this very stage. Picture Serge Gainsbourg, Boby Lapointe, and Henri Salvador captivating audiences with their unique styles. Even Fernand Raynaud, Pierre Perret, Yves Robert, and Pierre Repp found their footing within these walls. Les Trois Baudets wasn’t just a stepping stone; it was a launching pad. Canetti’s reign lasted until 1967. The venue then took a few detours, morphing into a sex shop, an erotic cabaret, and later a pop/rock venue in the mid-90s known as L’Erotika. But the spirit of Les Trois Baudets couldn’t be contained. In 2007, recognizing the need to reignite its original purpose, the City of Paris entrusted its rehabilitation. After a brief stint under RAFU management, Les Trois Baudets was reborn in 2009. Today, Les Trois Baudets continues its legacy of showcasing emerging talent, managed by Madline, a partnership between Blue Line productions and Mad Minute Music. The venue is more than a concert hall; it is a cultural institution. It is a living testament to the power of artistic vision, a place where the echoes of past legends inspire the voices of tomorrow.
