Slipping through the bustling Gare de Monaco Monte-Carlo, have you ever wondered where you actually are? You’ve arrived in Les Moneghetti, Monaco’s smallest district. Les Moneghetti is a hidden gem, tucked away in the northcentral part of Monaco. It’s a place where the steep inclines rise from the coast to the dramatic cliffs of La Turbie. The Ravine Sainte Dévote carves its way through the rocky landscape, adding to the unique charm of this often-overlooked neighborhood. Les Moneghetti translates to “Little Monaco” in the local dialect. It’s a place cherished by native Monegasques. Many choose to make their homes here, amidst the charm and tradition. This little neighborhood of just 11.5 hectares holds a surprising secret. It’s the gateway to the Principality for thousands of people daily. The modern Gare de Monaco Monte-Carlo, opened in 1999, replaced an older, above-ground station. This modern marvel, built within the cliffs, freed up valuable space in this densely populated country. The station primarily serves the local TER trains running between Marseille and Ventimiglia in Italy. However, it also welcomes the sleek TGVs from Paris and other far-flung destinations. Les Moneghetti offers a central location, nestled between the Jardin Exotique, La Condamine, and the glamorous Monte-Carlo. To the north lies Beausoleil, just across the border in France. While Les Moneghetti itself may be light on restaurants and shops, its central location puts countless options within easy reach. The Sacred Heart Church, or Sacré-Cœur, stands as a prominent landmark in Les Moneghetti. Built in the early 20th century by Jesuit monks, it wasn’t officially consecrated until 2015. This delay was attributed to significant world events, including the 1929 stock market crash, the Great Depression, and World War II. Inside, crystal chandeliers illuminate the marble pillars and gilt decorations, creating a truly magnificent space. A new organ, installed in 2016, fills the church with beautiful music, much to the delight of the parishioners. The church also serves as the headquarters for the Association des Guides et Scouts de Monaco, a co-ed scouting organization with Princess Caroline as its Honorary President. Les Moneghetti is a blend of convenience and charm, offering a unique perspective on Monaco. It’s a place where you can experience the everyday life of Monaco, away from the glitz and glamour, while still being close to all the action.
