Hidden in plain sight, Les Gémeaux scène nationale sits at 49 Avenue Georges Clemenceau. This isn’t just a theater. It’s a vibrant hub of artistic expression, a “Scène nationale” since 1994. Les Gémeaux, with its three distinct spaces, pulses with the rhythm of theater, dance, and jazz. Its history intertwines with the communities of Sceaux and Bourg-la-Reine. Originally envisioned as a socio-educational center in 1961, it evolved into a cultural center. The current building, inaugurated in 1994, replaced an older structure. This older building hosted the first seven editions of the International Women’s Film Festival before it moved to Créteil in 1985.

Les Gémeaux truly came into its own in 1994. The French Ministry of Culture designated it a “Scène nationale.” This recognition solidified its role as a major player in the French cultural landscape. The theater boasts a large hall with a capacity of 450 to 500 seats. There’s also a smaller, more intimate space with 179 seats. For jazz aficionados, the Sceaux What jazz club offers 150 seats and standing room for 300. From 1985 to 2021, Françoise Letellier steered the artistic direction of Les Gémeaux. Séverine Bouisset took the helm in February 2021, ushering in a new era.

Les Gémeaux champions long theatrical runs. It embraces international artists, creating a diverse and engaging program. The theater also hosts the annual Rendez-vous chorégraphiques de Sceaux, a celebration of contemporary dance. This commitment to dance has led to residencies for prominent choreographers like Yvann Alexandre, Joëlle Bouvier, and Abou Lagraa. Beyond its walls, Les Gémeaux extends its reach with the Sceaux Jazz Festival. Held in the Domaine Départemental de Sceaux, this festival brings the vibrant sounds of jazz to a wider audience. The programming at Les Gémeaux isn’t static. It constantly evolves, embracing new aesthetics and artistic disciplines. It also incorporates digital elements, reflecting the changing world. Les Gémeaux actively engages with younger audiences and families. It brings artistic experiences outside the confines of the theater, enriching the local community. Les Gémeaux stands as a testament to the power of art to connect, inspire, and transform.
