Daisy emblem. Does it spark any thoughts? That daisy was the registered emblem of Lèon Gaumont on January 14 1908. It was inspired by his mother’s first name. We are standing before Lèon Gaumont’s final resting place.

Lèon Gaumont. Born in Paris on May 10 1864. He significantly impacted the world of cinema. He died on August 10 1946 in Sainte-Maxime. He was a producer and editor. Lèon was known for films like The First Men in the Moon. He also produced Images de Chine and La nuit de noces de Calino.

Gaumont began his career far from the silver screen. In 1891 he directed Lampes Camus. These were factories making incandescent lamps. By 1895 he took over Comptoir général de photographie. It was a company dealing in optical and photographic equipment.

Seeing an opportunity, Lèon transformed it. He created the Gaumont Film Production Co in 1895. This company became a major rival to Pathé. Pathé was a large film organization in Britain and France. Alice Guy-Blache was his chief director.

Lèon Gaumont was an innovator. In 1899 he demonstrated the Chronophotograph projector. This projector could screen over 600 meters of film. It used a special spooling system.

In 1900, Lèon opened showrooms at 41 avenue de l’Opéra. He marketed the Kinora there. The Kinora transformed photos into moving pictures. Louis Lumière created it in 1896.

Lèon Gaumont also launched the Chrono de poche. It was a machine for amateurs using 15mm film. It took and projected films with central perforation.

The Gaumont Film Production Co faced challenges. Competition from Hollywood in the 1920s grew fierce. His American subsidiary merged with MGM.

Lèon married Camille Maillard in 1888. She brought a significant dowry and five children. His pioneering work earned him recognition. In 1923 he was decorated as an officer of the Legion of Honour.

Lèon Gaumont was laid to rest here in Belleville Cemetery. His wife Camille Maillard and his great-grandson Gilles Boulouque also rest here. An avenue in the 20th arrondissement of Paris bears his name. It is a lasting tribute to his contributions.

So remember Lèon Gaumont. He was a visionary. He shaped the early film industry. His daisy emblem continues to represent Gaumont. It is a symbol of innovation. It is a symbol of cinematic history.
