“Ever wonder why León is known as the intellectual heart of Nicaragua?” I ask. Here at León, we stand in a city brimming with history. It is also rich in culture. León is not just the second largest city in Nicaragua. It is a place where the past and present intertwine.

Founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba in 1524, the original city of León was located about 30 kilometers east of where we stand. That site is now known as León Viejo. In 1610, a series of earthquakes, triggered by a volcanic eruption, led to its abandonment. Imagine the chaos and fear as the earth shook. The decision was made to relocate.

This new León became a political and intellectual hub. The National Autonomous University of Nicaragua was founded here in 1813. This makes it the second oldest university in Central America. León was the capital of Nicaragua after it withdrew from the United Provinces of Central America in 1839. The capital status shifted between León and Granada. Finally, Managua became the permanent capital in 1852.

León has been home to many of Nicaragua’s most celebrated poets. Among them are Rubén Darío, Alfonso Cortés and Salomón de la Selva. Rubén Darío, in particular, was a leading figure of the Modernism Poetic Movement. He was declared the Prince of Spanish Letters.

The city boasts numerous architectural monuments. The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of León is a prime example. Built between 1747 and 1814, its solid construction has withstood earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and even bombings during civil wars. Several cannons were placed on its roof. This happened during the siege of the city in 1824 and the revolution of 1979.

The Assumption is the largest cathedral in Central America. It has been the first episcopal seat of Nicaragua since 1531. Within its crypts lie the remains of Rubén Darío. He rests at the foot of the statue of St. Paul. Other notable figures buried here include poets Salomón de la Selva and Alfonso Cortés. Also Miguel Larreynaga, the father of Nicaragua’s independence.

Legend speaks of tunnels connecting the cathedral to other temples. They served as hideouts during pirate attacks. Unfortunately, these tunnels are not accessible today. Some have been converted into the sewer system.

Another significant landmark is the Church of Sutiava. It is the oldest intact church in León. Construction began in 1698 and finished in 1710. The Church of San Francisco is another highlight. It is part of one of the oldest convents in Nicaragua.

The Cércel la 21 prison symbolizes a darker chapter in León’s history. Political prisoners were detained and tortured here. The façade was destroyed in 1979. Today, it serves as an art museum. It attracts those interested in the macabre.

León sits in a region of geological wonders. The Momotombo volcano looms in the distance. Cerro Negro is one of the youngest volcanoes in the world. Its eruptions have often affected the city.

As you explore León, remember its past. The struggles, the poetry, and the resilience of its people. León is a city that wears its history with pride. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Nicaragua.
