Can a sculpture capture the spirit of a place? Here at L’envol, we see how art breathes life into a changing urban landscape. L’envol, meaning “The Flight,” is a bronze sculpture created by Lucy + Jorge Orta for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It’s part of the “Les Victoires” art trail along the Canal Saint-Denis. This sculpture depicts a life-sized child holding a bird. It stands on the Franc-Moisin footbridge, overlooking the canal and the Olympic stadium. L’envol is more than just a statue. It symbolizes the bridge between generations, a poetic image of renewal. The child, with bird in hand, embodies the fervent hope of youth in this evolving neighborhood. The sculpture’s placement is significant. The Franc-Moisin area is undergoing urban and ecological transformations. L’envol stands as a beacon of the future, reflecting the energy of the games and the revitalization of the area. The artists collaborated with COAL, an organization promoting art and ecology, and partnered with the cities of Saint-Denis, Aubervilliers, and Paris to bring this vision to life. L’envol invites us to consider the dynamic relationship between art, urban development, and the environment. It’s a reminder that even amidst change, hope takes flight.
