“What if a peaceful mission turned tragic?” That question lingers here in Lengkong Wetan. It echoes through the very ground we stand on. This is the site of the Palagan Lengkong Monument. It stands as a solemn reminder of a pivotal moment in Indonesia’s fight for independence.

In January 1946, just months after Indonesia declared its independence, this area was the scene of a brutal clash. The story of Lengkong Wetan revolves around a mission led by Major Daan Mogot. He was a young and determined leader.

Daan Mogot aimed to disarm Japanese soldiers peacefully. These soldiers were still stationed in the Tangerang area. He led a group of young cadets from the Tangerang Military Academy. Their goal was to negotiate a peaceful surrender of weapons.

The mission seemed promising at first. Daan Mogot met with Captain Abe. Abe was the Japanese commander in Lengkong. While negotiations were underway, disaster struck. A sudden burst of gunfire erupted. It transformed the peaceful scene into a chaotic battleground.

Japanese soldiers opened fire on the unprepared Indonesian cadets. The attack was swift and merciless. Major Daan Mogot and dozens of his men were killed. Among the fallen were Lieutenant Soebianto Djojohadikusumo and Lieutenant Sutopo.

The events at Lengkong sparked outrage and fueled the Indonesian people’s determination. They were determined to secure their hard-won independence. The Palagan Lengkong Monument commemorates this tragic event. It honors the bravery and sacrifice of those who died here.

The monument stands on Jalan Bukit Golf Utara No. 2. This is where the events unfolded. It serves as a reminder of the cost of freedom. A visit here offers a powerful lesson in courage, resilience, and the pursuit of peace.

Daan Mogot’s name lives on. It is immortalized as the name of a major thoroughfare stretching from Tangerang to Jakarta. This serves as a daily reminder of his sacrifice. Every year on January 25th, Indonesia observes Hari Bakti Taruna Akademi Militer. This is a day to honor the fallen cadets. They include Daan Mogot and his men. They gave their lives at Lengkong.

As you reflect on the events that transpired here, remember the words of Suardin. He is a local historian. He reminds us that Lengkong Wetan is more than just a place. It is a symbol of resistance. It marks the unwavering spirit of Indonesia’s youth. They fought for a nation free from oppression. Their spirit remains alive today.
