The plaque itself, marking the former depot’s office building, is a modest but important reminder of Leith’s tram legacy. Imagine, if you will, this bustling hub back in its heyday. From 1905, this depot housed the electric trams that crisscrossed Leith, connecting its people and industries. It started under the Leith Corporation Tramways. Then, in 1920, it was absorbed into the larger Edinburgh Corporation Tramways network. The original nine tracks grew to twelve in 1937, and this very office building, with its sleek Art Deco design, was added to oversee the bustling operation. The air would have been thick with the smell of ozone and the sounds of clanging bells and hissing brakes as trams rumbled in and out of the depot. Sadly, the last tram departed in 1956, marking the end of an era. The sheds themselves are gone now, demolished in recent years, but this plaque and the memories it evokes keep the spirit of the Leith Tramways Depot alive.
