Ever since its inauguration in 1927 Leipzig Halle Airport has witnessed history unfold. This isn’t just any airport. It’s a significant player in Germany’s aviation landscape. Its location in Schkeuditz places it conveniently between Leipzig and Halle.

Leipzig Halle Airport didn’t begin as the cargo giant we know today. It opened its doors in 1927 with both domestic and international flights. Growth continued into the 1930s. Passenger numbers neared 60000 by 1932. The Second World War drastically altered its course. The airport was devastated by Allied bombing raids in 1944. Civilian operations ceased.

The airport’s story took a different turn under the German Democratic Republic. It primarily served as an industrial airport. Efforts to revitalize commercial air traffic in the 1950s and 60s were partially successful. Regular services during the Leipzig Trade Fair became a highlight. A more modern terminal was built in 1968. By 1972 the airport operated throughout the year. The 1980s saw a surge in popularity. Concorde flights from Air France and British Airways landed here during the Leipzig Trade Fair. Passenger numbers doubled to approximately 550000 annually by 1988.

Post-reunification the airport underwent a transformation. Terminal A was modernized. By 1992 annual passengers exceeded 1000000. Terminal B was completed in 1994. A new 3500 meter runway was added between 1998 and 2003. A new control tower opened in 2000.

A pivotal moment arrived in 2008. DHL Aviation relocated its European hub from Brussels to Leipzig Halle. This led to an enormous increase in cargo operations. The airport’s growth became even more pronounced. It aimed to host the 2012 Olympic Games which resulted in further modernization. The airport now boasts two parallel runways enabling simultaneous landings and take offs.

While passenger numbers have fluctuated over the years the airport has consistently ranked highly in Europe for cargo handling. It served as a hub for DHL Aviation and AeroLogic. It also accommodates NATO and EU military aircraft. The airport continues to adapt to the ever-changing aviation industry. Night flights for cargo operations are common with up to 170 occurring every night.

Today Leipzig Halle Airport stands as a testament to resilience innovation and its crucial role in global trade and logistics. Its history is a compelling story of adaptation growth and success against the backdrop of significant historical events. Its future is just as promising.
