“Dickschädel” they call it. A nickname for the Leher Wasserturm. Standing tall it dominates the Bremerhaven skyline. This isn’t just any water tower. It’s a piece of Bremerhaven history.

Built in 1885-86 the Leher Wasserturm is the third oldest of four water towers in modern-day Bremerhaven. Imagine the bustling activity of its construction. Workers laying brick upon brick creating this sturdy structure. Its purpose was vital supplying fresh water to the growing city. The tower’s round brick design is striking. A strong tower head with a flat cone roof completes the iconic look. Inside the tower head sits a massive iron Intze high tank. It holds a staggering 500 cubic meters of water.

The Leher Wasserturm didn’t just provide water. After World War II its two-story base served as temporary housing. Think of the families finding shelter within its walls. A testament to its resilience. In 1992 the tower received a much needed makeover. A new roof was installed ensuring its continued survival. But times changed. In 1996 the Bremen city utilities stopped using the Leher Wasserturm. Maintaining it cost 20000 euros annually. A proposal to transform it into a nightclub failed due to safety regulations.

From 2003 onward the city tried to sell the Leher Wasserturm. It finally went into private hands in 2005. Attempts to protect it as a historical monument failed in 1997. Only in 2013 was its historical significance finally recognized and it received official landmark status.

The Leher Wasserturm’s story is a journey through time. It reflects Bremerhaven’s growth challenges and resilience. It stands as a silent observer of the city’s past present and future. A testament to the ingenuity of past generations and a reminder of the city’s ongoing evolution. A true “Dickschädel” a tough nut to crack.
