A whisper of history. That’s what Lehe breathes. Right here on this very ground.

Lehe a district of Bremerhaven. Its story stretches back further than Bremerhaven itself. Centuries before the official founding of Bremerhaven in 1827. Small settlements dotted the swampy estuary. Lehe was one of them. Its existence dates back to the 12th century. Imagine life then. Simple homes built on islands. The constant rhythm of the tides.

In 1381 Bremen asserted its control over the lower Weser. Lehe became part of Bremen’s domain. It was then called Bremerlehe. A name that speaks of its connection to Bremen. It’s a fascinating connection to understand. Bremerhaven’s own origins are deeply entwined with Lehe’s long past.

The 17th century brought conflict. Swedish troops seized Bremerlehe. Emperor Ferdinand III intervened. He ordered the return of Bremerlehe to Bremen. But the First Bremian War erupted soon after. The treaty that followed saw Bremerlehe ceded to Swedish Bremen-Verden. A significant shift in power. It marked the beginning of a period of uncertainty for Lehe.

Plans for a fortified town were drawn up. This town would later become Bremerhaven. But attempts to build a castle called Carlsburg failed. A reminder that history isn’t always a straight line. Instead a meandering path shaped by chance. By conflict. And ultimately by cooperation.

Bremen finally acquired the territories at the mouth of the Weser in 1827. From the Kingdom of Hanover. The purchase was crucial for Bremen’s trade. The old port was silting up. Bremerhaven offered a new lifeline. A gateway to the world. And a fresh start for Lehe too.

Lehe continued to grow. It became part of Wesermünde in 1924. Then joined Bremerhaven in 1939. Finally it returned to Bremen’s jurisdiction in 1947. A journey through changes of power. Through wars. Through periods of peace.

Today Lehe stands as a testament to its resilience. A vibrant community. A place where centuries of history meet modern life. A place shaped by the Weser. By the tides. And by the enduring spirit of its people. This is Lehe. A captivating journey through time.
