Centuries ago, a small island amidst a swampy estuary became home to a settlement known as Lehe. This unassuming village, first mentioned in documents around the 12th century, would become a key player in a power struggle involving Bremen, Sweden, and Hanover. Lehe, located in what is now Bremerhaven, Germany, saw its fate intertwined with the ambitions of these powerful entities. In 1381, Bremen asserted its control over the lower Weser River, including Lehe, which was then referred to as Bremerlehe. This control, however, was challenged in 1653 when Swedish troops seized Bremerlehe. Although Emperor Ferdinand III demanded its return, the Swedes held firm, igniting the First Bremian War. Bremen ultimately lost Bremerlehe to Sweden in the subsequent peace treaty. The Swedes envisioned a fortified town on the site, a plan that would eventually lead to the creation of Bremerhaven. In 1672, they even attempted to build a castle named Carlsburg, though this endeavor ultimately failed. Lehe’s story took another turn in 1827. Bremen, under Burgomaster Johann Smidt, bought the land at the Weser’s mouth from Hanover, aiming to protect its overseas trade. This purchase paved the way for the founding of Bremerhaven, a new harbor for Bremen’s merchant fleet. Bremerhaven’s growth was rapid, fueled by trade and emigration to North America. Lehe, once a standalone village, became integrated into this burgeoning port city, contributing to its vibrant history. The Bremerhaven-Lehe railway station, opened in 1863, further cemented Lehe’s connection to the wider world. Today, Lehe stands as a testament to its resilient past, a district within Bremerhaven that bears witness to centuries of change and development.
