Was Leeste always part of Weyhe? No. Leeste has its own distinct history. Leeste became part of Weyhe on March 1, 1974. This Lower Saxon municipality, just 15 km south of Bremen, encompasses nine districts, including Leeste. Before this union, Leeste, Kirchweyhe, Lahausen, Sudweyhe, Erichshof, Melchiorshausen, Dreye, Jeebel, and Ahausen were separate entities. Imagine standing here in Leeste, now a vital part of Weyhe, but with its own story to tell. Leeste is mentioned as early as 860. A young girl, sick and seeking a miracle, journeyed from “Wege,” the old name for Leeste, to the tomb of Saint Willehad in Bremen. Legend says she found her cure there. This early mention connects Leeste to the wider religious history of the region, even before Weyhe existed as a unified entity. Today in Leeste, you’ll find the KGS Leeste, a Gesamtschule, or comprehensive school. This school offers all three traditional tracks in German education: Hauptschule, Realschule, and Gymnasium. This shows Leeste’s commitment to education within the larger Weyhe community. Leeste, now interwoven with Weyhe, retains echoes of its independent past.
