Have you ever wondered what it would be like to ride on a track used by Olympic champions? Right here, at the Lee Valley VeloPark, you can! This incredible cycling centre became a permanent fixture in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2014. Its unique claim to fame is that you can experience all four Olympic cycling disciplines here: track, BMX, road, and mountain biking. The most iconic part is the velodrome, often called “The Pringle” because of its distinctive wavy roof – you can see that it’s shaped like a bicycle wheel to reflect the sport itself. It is the only facility in the world where you can do all this! The velodrome hosted events at the London 2012 Games; and it was even the location of Sir Bradley Wiggins’ record-breaking hour-long cycle! But Lee Valley VeloPark doesn’t just cater to the elite. There are beginner’s sessions for everyone, including special ones for over 40s, women, and those with disabilities. The BMX track has been tweaked since the Olympics, making it less daunting for those new to the sport. For road cyclists, there’s a one-mile floodlit circuit, and in the surrounding area, there are five miles of mountain bike trails. You can see the legacy of the Olympics in the architecture and design! But the park is alive with the joy of cycling – you can actually feel the energy buzzing from the many talented riders that train here every day. So come on! Grab a bike and explore all the tracks that this exciting site has to offer.
