Once a derelict expanse. Now, a vibrant hub of activity. That is the story of Lee Valley Leisure Complex.
For decades, the Lee Valley was neglected. It was known as “London’s privy workshop and backyard”. The area housed railways, rubbish dumps and factories. These factories produced explosives and chemicals. They took advantage of the easterly winds.
But a transformation was on the horizon.
After World War II, a vision emerged. Sir Patrick Abercrombie proposed a “great piece of regenerative planning”. He wanted to weld every piece of land into a regional reservation.
In 1961, Alderman Lou Sherman championed this vision. He persuaded 17 local authorities to support him. In 1963, the Civic Trust assessed the valley’s potential. The report was positive. A Bill was introduced to establish the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.
The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority was formed in 1967. Its mission was to develop leisure, recreation and nature.
Over the past half-century, the Authority has transformed the area. Rubbish dumps became open spaces. Scrap yards turned into sports venues. These spaces attract over eight million visits a year.
The Lee Valley Leisure Complex is part of this transformation.
The park now stretches 26 miles. It offers a variety of experiences. There are sports, heritage sites and nature reserves. It fulfills its founders’ ambition. It is a “green lung” for the region and a “playground for Londoners”.
The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority owns part of the Olympic Park. It manages venues like the Lee Valley White Water Centre and Lee Valley VeloPark.
The Lee Valley Athletics Centre is a key part of the complex. It opened in 2007. It is the largest indoor and outdoor athletics facility in London. It has an indoor 200-meter track. The center hosted the Invictus Games in 2014.
The park continues to grow. The Authority plans to acquire more land. It wants to bring more leisure opportunities to the region.
As you explore Lee Valley Leisure Complex, remember its history. It rose from dereliction. Now, it offers sport, leisure and natural beauty. It is a testament to vision and dedication. Enjoy your time in this remarkable space.
