Lebuh Cecil Tokong Tua Pek Kong holds a special place in Penang’s heart. It’s believed to be the very first Tua Pek Kong temple in Malaysia. This makes it incredibly significant. It’s not just a place of worship. It’s the origin point of the Tua Pek Kong’s veneration throughout the region.
The story begins long ago. Before Francis Light even set foot on Penang Island. Three Hakka men Zhang Li Chiu Hsiao Ching and Ma Fu Choon sailed towards Sumatra. A storm changed their course. They landed in Tanjung Tokong. A small fishing village then only had about fifty inhabitants. Imagine their surprise. Zhang Li a scholar stayed. His brothers visited regularly. One day Zhang Li was found dead near a large boulder. He was buried there. His brothers joined him after their deaths.
The local people revered these men. They built Lebuh Cecil Tokong Tua Pek Kong around 1799. It’s named after Zhang Li who became known as Tua Pek Kong meaning Great Grand Uncle. The temple is also called Hai Zhu Yu Tua Pek Kong Temple meaning Sea Pearl Temple. This refers to Pulau Tikus which was known as Sea Pearl Island. The temple’s location near the sea also explains its significance. It’s a place of tranquility a connection to the past and the sea.
Every year on the 14th night of Chinese New Year a special ceremony takes place. It’s called Chneah Hoay. They observe the flames of a ceremonial urn. The flames are believed to predict the coming year’s economic fortune. This unique tradition adds another layer to Lebuh Cecil Tokong Tua Pek Kong’s story.
The temple has changed over time. It has undergone renovations. There’s now a beautiful Avatar Garden. The temple continues to be a place of devotion a landmark and a unique tourist attraction. Lebuh Cecil Tokong Tua Pek Kong stands as a symbol of resilience faith and the enduring spirit of the Peranakan Chinese community.
