Leabank Park itself has no direct connection to this story. However the land nearby holds the forgotten history of Auckland’s first Luna Park. Thousands flocked to the waterfront park. Its wooden rollercoaster was a major attraction. There was also a log flume and a funhouse. The park boasted dodgems and an arcade. Live shows added to the excitement.
Luna Park occupied three acres of prime real estate. The amusement park brought a festive atmosphere to Auckland. This was a time long before Disneyland existed. The park was modeled after famous Luna Parks in New York and Melbourne. However its success was short-lived.
Just three months after its grand opening a massive fire destroyed the tea rooms. The funhouse and part of the rollercoaster also burned. Rebuilding costs were enormous. Then a year later another fire broke out. These disasters hurt the park’s reputation.
