Ever wonder how a place gets its name? Today, we are exploring Le Plessis-Bouchard. This charming commune in the Val-d’Oise department has a story woven into its very name.

Le Plessis-Bouchard is located in the Île-de-France region. Let’s break down the name. “Plessis” comes from “Plesi” in 1237. It evolved through “Plesseio” in 1269 and “Plesseyum” in 1274. Finally, it became “Plesseiz” in 1281. This refers to the palissade. It was a fence that once protected the village.

The “Bouchard” part honors Bouchard le Barbu. He was the first lord of Montmorency. His name was added in the 16th century. Together, Le Plessis-Bouchard tells a tale of protection and local nobility.

Imagine the early days of Le Plessis-Bouchard. The first residents settled in a challenging landscape. There were woods, moors, and marshes. To defend against animals from the nearby Boissy forest, they built enclosures. These “plaisses” gave the village its name. But they had an advantage. The Roman road, the chaussée Jules-César was close by.

In the 12th century, Le Plessis was part of Saint-Leu parish. Maurice de Sully, Bishop of Paris, made Le Plessis-Bouchard a parish in 1192. The existing chapel became the Saint-Nicolas Church. A cemetery surrounded it. The earliest known mention of Le Plessis-Bouchard dates back to this time.

Unlike other villages, Le Plessis remained small. It did not develop into a full-fledged seigneury. There was no resident lord or chateau. Residents had to use the mill of the Lord of Saint-Leu-la-Forêt.

By 2022, the population was over 8,300. The town covers a small area. It is just 2.66 square kilometers. The people here are called Plessis-Buccardesiens. Today, Le Plessis-Bouchard is easily accessible. You can reach it via the Franconville – Le Plessis-Bouchard train station.

Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and modern life in Le Plessis-Bouchard. From its protective palisades to its noble namesake, this commune embodies the rich heritage of the Val-d’Oise.
