Marvelous Mesnil-le-Roi a royal legacy unfolds before you. This unassuming village boasts a history intertwined with French royalty and intriguing legends. For centuries Mesnil-le-Roi nestled beside the Seine River played host to powerful figures.

Hugues Capet the founder of the Capetian dynasty is said to have established a royal estate here. He kept only “the small royal domain of Mesnil” after redistributing lands held by the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Subsequent kings residing in nearby Saint-Germain-en-Laye frequented Mesnil-le-Roi. Legend claims that Francis I was raised at the 13th-century Château de Vaux. Some say it was the royal kennels or a refuge for illegitimate royal children.

The village’s story is also one of agriculture. Until the French Revolution Mesnil-le-Roi and Carrières-sous-le-Bois-en-Laye formed a single parish. The area was renowned for its fruit orchards. Plums grown in Mesnil-le-Roi were even exported to London until the early 20th century. The region’s vineyards produced wine enjoyed by royalty for centuries before disappearing after World War II.

The 17th and 18th centuries saw extensive quarrying for building materials. Carrières’ port facilitated the transport of stone by water to Paris and surrounding areas. Wealthy individuals and financiers established grand estates in Mesnil-le-Roi creating a landscape of expansive parks and gardens. A 17th-century château near the church was destroyed around 1830 and then rebuilt in Dutch style by financier William Hope only to be demolished in 1938.

The Mesnil-le-Roi coat of arms features a salamander a symbol of Francis I. It also includes a falcon perhaps representing the king’s love of hunting or the phoenix a symbol of Eleanor of Austria Francis I’s second wife. The de La Salle family were lords of Carrières-sous-Bois and their arms the spurs are incorporated into Mesnil-le-Roi’s coat of arms. One memorable member Nicolas Adrien de La Salle was a colorful figure. He served as an officer a tavern keeper a porcelain manufacturer and even a revolutionary.

In the 20th century Mesnil-le-Roi attracted a diverse array of prominent residents including artists writers and politicians. The archives of Polish writers Jerzy Giedroyc and Josef Czapski housed in their pavilion at 91 Avenue de Poissy are classified UNESCO’s Memory of the World. Mesnil-le-Roi’s history is a captivating blend of royal connections agricultural prosperity and artistic inspiration. It is a testament to its enduring charm and rich past.
