Village-rue. That’s how Le Mesnil-Aubry is often described. It’s a fitting description for this village. Le Mesnil-Aubry sits on the Paris-Chantilly route.

Today, we’ll uncover the layers of Le Mesnil-Aubry history together. We will discover its evolution from a small agricultural community. Le Mesnil-Aubry has become a charming residential village.

The first recorded mention of Le Mesnil-Aubry dates back to 1150. Albéric Maunourry obtained land from the Bishop of Paris. The land was located four and a half leagues from Paris. It was on the main road to Luzarches.

The name Le Mesnil-Aubry may come from “Manssionile”. Manssionile means “small house in the countryside”. The Aubry part comes from Albéric. Over time Manssionile morphed into Mesnil.

Imagine Le Mesnil-Aubry centuries ago. It was a collection of farms around the 16th-century church. This center stretched north to south along the royal road. This road connected Paris to the northern regions.

The transverse roads provided access to fields. They linked Le Mesnil-Aubry to neighboring villages. Some of these paths remain. They now serve as hiking trails for pedestrians.

For many years, Le Mesnil-Aubry thrived on agriculture. The village was also sustained by activities linked to National Route 16. This road ran through it. However, everything changed in the early 1960s. The road was diverted. This diverted the vitality of Le Mesnil-Aubry. Shops became used only by the inhabitants.

But Le Mesnil-Aubry adapted. A transformation began. New owners renovated old buildings. Housing developments emerged. They first appeared along the central road. Then, they spread behind the existing buildings. These new areas are separate from the old center. They are divided by open spaces and abandoned buildings.

The church of the Nativity-of-the-Virgin is a highlight. It is a classified historical monument. The church showcases architectural beauty. Construction occurred in two phases. The first phase began in 1531. The second phase took place from 1554 to 1582. Anne de Montmorency commissioned it.

Inside the church, admire the star vaults. They feature intersecting ribs. Also see the tombstones dating from the 15th to 18th centuries. Stroll along Rue des Marronniers. You will see a farmhouse with a dovecote. It dates to the 18th and 19th centuries. Another farm has an oven with a tall brick chimney.

Le Mesnil-Aubry also has a town hall built in the 19th century. A bell tower was added later.

Today, Le Mesnil-Aubry is mainly a residential village. It shares this trait with many neighboring communities. The people of Le Mesnil-Aubry are called Mesnilois. The village continues to evolve. Le Mesnil-Aubry embraces its rich heritage. It also welcomes the future with open arms.
