Le jeu de la vie, a creation of artist Meschac Gaba, isn’t your typical board game. This installation, with its hopscotch grid drawn on the ground, reimagines the concept of Conway’s Game of Life, a cellular automaton devised by mathematician John Horton Conway. Le jeu de la vie installation takes Conway’s mathematical world and transforms it into a playful, interactive experience. Think of it as a virtual world teeming with cells, reproducing and dying according to specific rules. While Conway’s game doesn’t require a player in the traditional sense, Gaba’s Le jeu de la vie encourages interaction. Visitors can engage with the artwork, tracing the patterns on the ground and perhaps even inventing their own rules of play. This installation prompts reflection on the very nature of life, its cycles, and the rules that govern it.
