In 1826, a spark ignited in the heart of Paris. A satirical weekly, Le Figaro, was born, named after the quick-witted barber from Beaumarchais’s play. Le Figaro adopted Figaro’s motto: “Without the freedom to criticize, there is no flattering praise.” This motto became a guiding principle for the newspaper. Le Figaro, right here at 14 Boulevard Haussmann, transitioned from a weekly publication to a daily newspaper in 1866. The first daily edition, published on November 16th, sold an astounding 56,000 copies. This made it the highest-circulation newspaper in France at the time. Le Figaro was initially royalist in its editorial stance. Over the years, Le Figaro evolved. It became the voice of the upper middle class, maintaining a conservative position. The newspaper has been owned by the Dassault Group since 2004, further solidifying its position in French media. Le Figaro has not been without its controversies, particularly regarding its editorial independence under Dassault’s ownership. Despite this, Le Figaro remains a significant force in French journalism, known for its comprehensive coverage of national and international news. Here, at its headquarters in the 9th arrondissement, Le Figaro continues to publish daily. It offers its unique blend of news, analysis, and cultural commentary.
