Tucked between buildings in the heart of Rogers Park lies a small but significant green space: Lazarus Park. Don’t let its size fool you. This park holds a powerful story within its borders. It all began in 1976 when the city purchased this very spot. It was originally intended as a simple playlot. However, in 1986, Lazarus Park received its official name, honoring the American poet and philanthropist Emma Lazarus. While her name might not be instantly recognizable, her words certainly are. Emma Lazarus penned the iconic lines etched onto the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” In a beautiful tribute coinciding with the Statue of Liberty’s 100th anniversary, the Rogers Park Chapter of Emma Lazarus Jewish Women’s Clubs advocated for the park’s naming. They saw it as a fitting way to commemorate both Lazarus’ legacy and the statue’s message of hope and opportunity. Today, Lazarus Park stands as a testament to the power of words and the welcoming spirit embodied by both Emma Lazarus and the Statue of Liberty.
