Picture this a small storefront church in the heart of Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood. This is Lawndale Community Church. It wasn’t always a beacon of hope. In the 1970s North Lawndale faced economic hardship and high crime. Yet from this seemingly hopeless landscape Lawndale Community Church emerged.
Founded in 1978 the church started as a humble gathering. It began with high school students a coach and his wife. Wayne “Coach” Gordon a white man from Iowa had a vision. He wanted to be more than a teacher. He wanted to be a part of the community he served. He led Bible studies with his students. They discussed how to love their neighbors. They decided to become a church. Not just in a building but in the neighborhood.
Lawndale Community Church wasn’t just about Sunday services. It became a catalyst for change. It started numerous ministries. The Lawndale Christian Health Center opened in 1984. It provided much needed healthcare to the community. The Lawndale Christian Development Corporation built thousands of affordable housing units. It also built hundreds of single family homes. A legal center was established to help those in need. Even a ministry to support men reintegrating from prison was created.
The church’s impact grew far beyond North Lawndale. The Christian Community Development Association CCDA emerged from its work. This association now connects thousands of people working for justice. It’s a testament to the power of community and faith.
The story of Lawndale Community Church isn’t just about buildings and programs. It’s about the people. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors. It’s about a coach who saw a need and acted. It’s about a community that refused to give up. It’s a miracle. A testament to what’s possible when faith meets action. It’s a story that continues to unfold in the vibrant heart of Chicago. A story of resilience faith and the transformative power of love.
