Right here, in the heart of Aarhus, stands Laursens Realskole, a testament to the enduring power of education. Its story begins not in a grand hall, but in the cozy confines of a private residence. In 1886, master painter Hermann Poulsen hired a certain Anna Laursen to tutor his children, marking the humble genesis of Laursens Realskole. Word of Anna’s exceptional teaching spread like wildfire, leading other families to seek her tutelage for their children. By 1888, the burgeoning student body outgrew the confines of the Poulsen residence. Laursen had to relocate to rented premises to accommodate the burgeoning student body, which had swelled to 36 eager learners.
As the years unfolded, Anna Laursen’s dedication solidified the school’s reputation as a beacon of academic excellence. In 1891, she assumed leadership, and a decade later, the school achieved the distinction of being examination-entitled. It was then that it proudly adopted the name Fru Laursens Realskole. This grand old building we see today, situated at Hjelmensgade 12, became the school’s home in 1920. While Anna Laursen passed away in 1911, her legacy of dedication to education lived on. Even today, Laursens Realskole continues to nurture young minds within these very walls.
