Surrounded by tall kanuka trees Lauderdale Reserve awaits. A haven of native jasmine and clematis it’s a small grassy reserve. Lauderdale Reserve is part of the Eskdale Reserve Network a collection of connected reserves. It boasts a rich history and diverse ecosystem. The reserve has been a recreational space for over a hundred years. It’s a significant ecological area with maturing and regenerating kauri trees. These majestic trees are at risk from kauri dieback disease. A major track upgrade project was completed to mitigate this risk. The project involved rerouting and renewing over eight kilometers of tracks. This made Lauderdale Reserve more accessible for walkers and cyclists. The upgrades included the construction of five new bridges and several boardwalks. The main walking and cycling loop is now step-free. This ensures accessibility for wheelchairs and prams. Lauderdale Reserve also features a small cascade. The stream falls into a wide pool. From a vantage point you can see Kaipatiki Creek. The creek is lined with mangroves. The reserve is home to various native birds including tui kereru and fantails. There are also freshwater mussels. Perhaps you’ll even spot glow-worms. Kaipatiki Project volunteers work hard to protect the reserve. They undertake regular weed control and pest management. They also plant native seedlings. Their work helps ensure the long-term health of Lauderdale Reserve. Lauderdale Reserve is a true treasure. It’s a place of beauty tranquility and rich biodiversity.
