Why would a church need a relay baton? You might ask yourself this very question standing in front of Latchett Evangelical Church. Well, this house of worship, situated right here on Latchett Road in London, has a fascinating history of community and change. Latchett Evangelical Church was founded nearly 90 years ago in 1933. It all began with Dr. David Smith purchasing a simple ‘Tin Tab’ on Maybank Road, a space envisioned for both worship and community engagement. Years later, in 1961, the congregation came together and through their own fundraising efforts, built the very structure we see today. However, time marches on for us all, and by 2017 the church elders, recognizing the need for fresh energy, made the difficult decision to seek new leadership. They entrusted the building to the Church Growth Trust, a charity dedicated to keeping churches vibrant. This led to The Bridge Church, a congregation already active in the Woodford and Buckhurst Hill areas, becoming the new stewards of Latchett Evangelical Church. The transition, marked by a heartwarming handover ceremony with over 100 attendees, included a symbolic passing of a giant key and yes, a relay baton. This signified the continuation of the church’s mission and its deep connection to the community. So while the name and appearance may evolve, the spirit of faith and service, first envisioned by Dr. Smith in that humble ‘Tin Tab’, continues to resonate within Latchett Evangelical Church.
