Standing here, before the renowned Lasswade Rugby Football Club, we’re at a venue steeped in history. Lasswade Rugby Football Club, established in 1921, has been a cornerstone of the Bonnyrigg community for over a century. The club originally played its matches in a field provided by the Goldie family, but in 1974, they moved to their current home at Hawthornden. This move marked a turning point for the club. They had a proper clubhouse for the first time and access to top-notch facilities. The club’s ambition was evident in its decision to sell one of its pitches in 2003 to fund further developments. The result? Two international-sized floodlit pitches and a grandstand that could accommodate 350 eager spectators. Over the years, Lasswade Rugby Football Club has celebrated its fair share of victories and faced its share of setbacks. They’ve climbed the ranks of Scottish rugby, even achieving Premiership Division Three status – their highest league position ever – in the 2011-12 season. The club has also lifted trophies, securing the Scottish National League Division Three title three times and the Scottish Rugby Shield twice. The victories at Murrayfield in the final of the SHE National Shield, particularly the 2010 win against Greenock Wanderers, are still fondly remembered and spoken of with pride by the club’s loyal supporters. One such player is Peter Wright, a former Scotland national rugby union team and British and Irish Lions prop forward, who began his rugby journey right here at Lasswade.
