Established on September 21 1884 Las Violetas opened its doors. Two immigrants founded this elegant establishment. It was named Las Violetas because violet flowerbeds lined its facade. Las Violetas quickly became a haven for the city’s elite. Elegant carriages carrying aristocrats arrived at its doors. Even Carlos Pellegrini the future president attended its grand opening. He arrived on a special streetcar. Many of his distinguished friends accompanied him.

Las Violetas attracted politicians artists and writers. Roberto Arlt a famous Argentine writer frequented the cafe. He even used it as a setting in his short story Noche Terrible. Carlos Gardel the iconic tango singer was also a regular. He often visited with his friend Irineo Leguisamo. Other notable figures like José María Contursi and Azucena Maizani graced Las Violetas with their presence. Even former President Arturo Frondizi a local resident was a frequent visitor.

The current building however dates back to the 1920s. It boasts stunning features. High ceilings and bronze columns add to its grandeur. Beautiful stained-glass windows and Italian marble floors create an atmosphere of refined elegance. Las Violetas has always been known for its luxurious atmosphere. It stood in stark contrast to the pulpería a humble tavern located diagonally across the intersection.

Las Violetas is more than just a beautiful space. It holds a secret history. During Argentina’s military dictatorship the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo met there secretly. They pretended to be celebrating birthdays. In reality they were planning ways to find their grandchildren who had been kidnapped and disappeared.

Las Violetas is a “Bar Notable” a designation recognizing its historical significance. It has weathered several challenges. In the 1990s the owners declared bankruptcy. The cafe closed for a while. Thankfully a group of restaurateurs spearheaded its restoration from January to June 2001. They meticulously restored its wooden paneling chandeliers columns and ceiling. They even replaced the floor while keeping its size shape and original colors. The exterior marble facade remained untouched. Las Violetas reopened its doors on July 17 2001.

Today Las Violetas remains a vibrant meeting point. Argentinian characters mingle with curious tourists. They enjoy exquisite meals and pastries. They sip coffee or tea.
