Sculpted in concrete, three graceful figures reach towards the Mexico City sky. These are Las Tres Gracias, a monumental artwork gracing the intersection of Periferico Sur and Insurgentes Sur. Las Tres Gracias, or “The Three Graces,” are a tribute to the ancient Greek goddesses of beauty, joy, and abundance. They were created by Czechoslovakian artist Miroslav Chlupac for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics as part of the Ruta de la Amistad, or “Friendship Route.” This route is a collection of 19 sculptures by international artists, symbolizing global unity and friendship.

Las Tres Gracias stand tall at 12.5 meters, their reinforced concrete forms painted in vibrant hues of pink and lilac. Two of the graces are a striking pink, while the third stands out in lilac. These undulating columns were originally placed along the Periferico Sur for the Olympics. However, the construction of the Autopista Urbana Sur necessitated their relocation in 2012. They now stand proudly at their current location, a testament to their enduring beauty and resilience. Imagine the bustling activity during the 1968 Olympics, with people from all over the world marveling at these towering figures. They represented not only Czechoslovakia but also the spirit of international collaboration and artistic expression.

The sculptures endured years of neglect after the Olympics. They were finally restored in 2007, their colors renewed and their concrete forms strengthened. The restoration breathed new life into Las Tres Gracias, ensuring that they continue to inspire awe and admiration in all who see them. These sculptures are not just static objects; they are a living testament to the power of art to transcend time and connect cultures. Standing here before them, you can almost feel the echoes of the 1968 Olympics, the cheers of the crowds, and the hope for a more united world. Las Tres Gracias are more than just sculptures; they are a symbol of resilience, artistic vision, and the enduring power of international friendship. Their presence here reminds us of the importance of cultural exchange and the beauty that can arise from collaboration. They stand as a symbol of hope, reminding us that even amidst change and challenge, beauty and grace can endure.
