Larvotto, also known as Larvotto/Bas Moulins, isn’t just Monaco’s most populated ward. It’s a testament to human ingenuity, where a significant portion of the land was reclaimed from the sea. Imagine, before the gleaming high-rises and the gentle lull of the Mediterranean waves, this area was a humble marsh. Few souls called it home, just two recorded inhabitants in 1699. They lived near Place des Moulins, a far cry from the vibrant Larvotto we see today. The arrival of the railway in 1868 brought more people seeking the simple pleasure of a pebble beach. The area was first known as “Les Mouettes” (The Seagulls), then “Bas-Moulins” (Lower Mills), before finally adopting the name Larvotto, derived from the old French “la révote,” meaning a curve in the coastline. Today, Larvotto beach, Monaco’s last public beach, stretches along the azure waters. The iconic Avenue Princesse Grace, bordering the beach, holds the title of the world’s most expensive street. Here, apartments once averaged a staggering $75,000 per square meter. The Grimaldi Forum, a hub for conferences and congresses, stands proudly on Larvotto’s seafront, a symbol of Monaco’s global presence. But Larvotto is more than just concrete and steel. It’s a haven for both land and sea life. The Japanese Garden offers a tranquil escape, while beneath the waves lies the Larvotto and Portier Coastal Reserve, a Ramsar site teeming with marine life. In 2016, as Monaco expanded its footprint with the Le Portier land reclamation project, great care was taken to preserve this delicate ecosystem. Posidonia seagrass meadows, lithophyllum rocks, and even 47 large pen shells (Nacres) were carefully transplanted to ensure their survival. Larvotto’s story continues, a dynamic interplay of urban development and natural preservation.
