What was once a chicken ranch is now a vibrant hub of activity. Larsen Park, nestled in San Francisco’s Parkside District, has a fascinating story to tell. Carl Larsen, a Danish immigrant, gifted this land to the city in 1926. He envisioned a place where the community could gather and enjoy the fresh air, and his vision became a reality. Larsen Park opened in 1927, complete with outdoor card rooms, a baseball diamond, tennis courts, and even a soccer field. Some of these features are gone now. But the park’s spirit of recreation and community remains strong. Larsen Park is more than just green lawns and sports fields. It’s a place where history comes alive. Did you know this park once boasted not one, not two, but three retired Navy jets? The first, a Grumman F-9 Cougar, arrived in 1959. It made the journey by road all the way from Moffett Field. Later, an F-8 Crusader replaced a North American FJ-2/-3 Fury. This Crusader was dramatically delivered by helicopter, flying under both the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge before landing at the San Francisco Zoo for safety. These jets served as unique play structures, making Larsen Park a local landmark affectionately known as “Jet Plane Park”. The jets are gone now, but their legacy lives on in a jet-inspired sculpture in the playground. This sculpture is a testament to the community’s efforts to preserve the park’s unique history. Beyond the playground and sports facilities, Larsen Park is also home to the Charlie Sava Pool. Originally called Larsen Pool, it was renamed to honor a local swimming instructor who coached Olympic swimmer Ann Curtis. The current pool building, opened in 2008, offers a breathtaking view of Stern Grove. From chicken ranch to community hub, Larsen Park continues to evolve. It stands as a testament to Carl Larsen’s generosity and the community’s dedication to preserving its unique charm.
