A silent stone sentinel marks a pivotal moment in Lisbon’s history. This is the Lápide da Cerca Fernandina Plaque. It quietly commemorates the construction of the Fernandine Wall. Look closely at the Lápide da Cerca Fernandina Plaque. It stands as a testament to King Ferdinand I’s ambitious defensive project.

In 1373, facing threats from Castile, King Ferdinand ordered Lisbon’s fortifications to be strengthened. The Lápide da Cerca Fernandina Plaque marks a section of that defensive wall. The king knew Lisbon needed better defenses. This wasn’t just about Lisbon. Ferdinand also fortified other towns in the Tagus region. He understood the importance of protecting his kingdom.

Construction of the Fernandine Wall was swift. It was completed in just two years. If the masonry of the Cerca Fernandina were made into a wall one meter high it would stretch from Lisbon to Porto. Imagine the bustle. Around 2,000 laborers and craftsmen worked tirelessly. They used local materials. They built a strong structure to protect Lisbon.

The Fernandine Wall had two segments. One stretched east and the other west of the older Moorish walls. The eastern segment was about 1,920 meters long. It enclosed 26.65 hectares. The western part ran for 2,770 meters. It enclosed 61.27 hectares. Towers rose about 15 meters high along the wall. Smaller flanking towers called cubelos also reinforced the defenses.

The wall itself varied in height. It was generally about eight meters tall. Its width ranged from 175 to 220 centimeters. A barbican extended outward from the wall, adding another layer of defense. The Cerca Fernandina consisted of two parts extending to the east and west of the Cerca Moura. The eastern segment is 1920 m long and the western segment is 2770 m long.

The Lápide da Cerca Fernandina Plaque serves as a tangible link to this history. It reminds us of Lisbon’s resilience. The plaque is a simple stone. Yet, it speaks volumes about the city’s past. It commemorates a time of conflict and construction. It marks a pivotal moment in Lisbon’s story. The Lápide da Cerca Fernandina Plaque is a reminder of Lisbon’s enduring spirit.

Today only fragments of the wall remain. They are embedded in buildings and open spaces. The Lisbon walls included the São Jorge Castle proper and its walls the Cerca Moura and the Cerca Fernandina. These fragments whisper tales of kings and sieges. The Lápide da Cerca Fernandina Plaque helps us remember this important part of Lisbon’s past. It stands silently watching over Lisbon. It connects us to the past. It invites us to reflect on the forces that shaped this beautiful city.
