Envision fortresses rising from the sea. Langlütjen I Fort is one of these marvels. It stands as a testament to 19th-century military engineering. This artificial island once protected Bremen’s harbors. It now offers a glimpse into Germany’s naval past.

Langlütjen I is one of two islands. They are called Langlütjen I and Langlütjen II. These islands were created in the 1800s. They were meant to defend against sea attacks. The islands are near Bremerhaven. They played a key role in coastal defense.

Imagine the scene in 1869. Construction began on this very spot. Around 300 workers toiled daily. They faced rough conditions. The building site was often underwater. Work progressed only from March to December. They drove 112000 oak piles into the ground. The foundations included brushwood brick rubble and sandstone. These materials came from distant quarries.

Langlütjen I eventually housed nine 21-cm guns. These guns were mounted in armored turrets. The fort was ready to repel invaders. Yet Langlütjen I never saw battle. It remained a silent guardian. After World War I the victors removed its armaments.

During World War II the fort was repurposed. Flak positions were installed. These held 10.5-cm guns in concrete stands. These installations were later blown up. Today debris still emerges from the sand.

Birdwatchers flock to Langlütjen I. They spot shelducks marsh harriers and whooper swans. Oystercatchers and various terns are common sights. The reed bed serves as a crucial breeding ground.

Langlütjen I has changed hands. It was sold to a businesswoman from Oldenburg. In 2015 there were concerns about visitors disturbing the national park’s quiet zone.
